The Hunter, L.J. Shen (Boston Belles #1)

L.J. Shen ormai è un nome conosciuto qui sul blog; mi sto divertendo a scoprire tutti i suoi libri, che sono veramente tanti, ma quanto scrive? The Hunter è il primo volume di una serie che ha come protagonista un gruppo di amiche che fanno parte o gravitano attorno a una facoltosa famiglia di Boston, i Fitzpatrick. Tolto Wolfe di The Kiss Thief (mini recensione qui) che per me è il peggio del peggio, il protagonista maschile di The Hunter è quello che finora mi è piaciuto di meno. Diciamo che è un personaggio che cresce lentamente nel lettore: Hunter all'inizio è un po' uno scapestrato superficiale e incline a usare decisamente troppi riferimenti sessuali nelle frasi; ovviamente c'è più di questo e si scopre nel corso del romanzo ma non è bastato per farmelo piacere del tutto. Questione di gusti immagino. La protagonista femminile, Sailor, è ok ma anche qui francamente non ho molto da dire.

Only Cillian doesn’t hand out free favors.

Now I’m the eldest Fitzpatrick brother’s little toy.
To play, to mold, to break.
Too bad Cillian forgot one, tiny detail.
Persephone wasn’t only the goddess of spring; she was also the queen of death.
He thinks I’ll buckle under the weight of his mind games.
He is about to find out the most lethal poison is also the sweetest.

The Villain è il secondo libro della serie Boston Belles e ha come protagonista Cillian Fitzpatrick e Persephone, che avevamo già conosciuto nel libro precedente. Ho trovato Cillian e Persephone molto più interessanti dei protagonisti di The Hunter e per questo il romanzo mi è piaciuto molto di più. Anche in questo caso abbiamo un protagonista maschile un po' controverso che però ha le sue ragioni; la protagonista femminile è altrettanto interessante e mi è piaciuto il suo essere una persona dolce e sognatrice ma che al tempo stesso non si fa mettere i piedi in testa. 

 

Più in generale, adoro il fatto che i titoli dei romanzi della Shen richiamino sempre in qualche modo i protagonisti e che i nomi di questi ultimi facciano a loro volta riferimento a una loro caratteristica o a rimandi esterni come in questo caso il mito di Ade e Persefone.

Trama: For Penny Lee high school was a total nonevent. Her friends were okay, her grades were fine, and while she somehow managed to land a boyfriend, he doesn’t actually know anything about her. When Penny heads to college in Austin, Texas, to learn how to become a writer, it’s seventy-nine miles and a zillion light years away from everything she can’t wait to leave behind.

Sam’s stuck. Literally, figuratively, emotionally, financially. He works at a café and sleeps there too, on a mattress on the floor of an empty storage room upstairs. He knows that this is the god-awful chapter of his life that will serve as inspiration for when he’s a famous movie director but right this second the seventeen bucks in his checking account and his dying laptop are really testing him.

When Sam and Penny cross paths it’s less meet-cute and more a collision of unbearable awkwardness. Still, they swap numbers and stay in touch—via text—and soon become digitally inseparable, sharing their deepest anxieties and secret dreams without the humiliating weirdness of having to see each other.

Tra i vari espedienti letterari nei romance, uno di quelli che preferisco è l'uso delle lettere o, come in questo caso, degli sms tra i protagonisti. Penso che sia un modo originale e carino per mostrare il rapporto tra i personaggi e il loro carattere. In Emergency Contact la parte dei messaggi tra Sam e Penny è infatti quella che mi è piaciuta maggiormente, anche se a volte non si capiva bene chi scrivesse cosa.

I due protagonisti sono particolari, non sono di quelli che risultano subito simpaticissimi ma crescono pagina dopo pagina. Potete leggere la recensione qui sul blog o su Instagram!

La lettura preferita di Marzo è stata sicuramente The Love Hypothesis. Un romanzo davvero davvero carino e tenero di cui vi ho già parlato QUI.
